2022 BMW 430i Gran Coupe Interior
As with other versions of the 4 Series, the cabin of the 430i has a cockpit-like feel befitting BMW's "Ultimate Driving Machine" ethos. Which isn't to say it isn't still luxurious. My tester was fitted with winter must-haves like heated seats and a heated steering wheel, and the large moonroof gave the environs an airy, open feel. Material quality is high, every touchpoint is soft, and while this machine is loaded with cutting-edge tech, the whiz-bang bits are unobtrusive and intuitive.
For instance, the touchscreen at the center of the dash is large and easy to see in any kind of light. But it also sits below the horizon, which prevents it from looking tacked on, as if it was an afterthought. In my opinion, BMW's iDrive 7.0 is one of the best in the business, and the voice recognition works well to accomplish things like changing the radio station or entering an address into the navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the 4 Series line, and features like a WiFi hotspot and wireless charging pad at the base of the console will ensure tech-savvy folks remain charged up and connected.
The back seats of the 430i Gran Coupe will be comfortable for even larger adults, and there's 16.6 cubic feet of space in the truck. Fold down the rear seats, and that climbs to a quite respectable 45.6 cubic feet. So don't think you have to trade up to an SUV to make those weekly Costco runs.
2022 BMW 430i Gran Coupe Performance
Building fun-to-drive vehicles is BMW's bread and butter, so it should come as no surprise that the 430i delivers thrills. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder which produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Now, even though it doesn't deliver the sledgehammer-like power of say, the i4 M50, there's more than enough poke during any driving situation. And more importantly, the handling is excellent.
While I could have used a little more feedback through the wheel? The 430i went right where I pointed it, and I enjoyed taking it along some of my favorite twisty sections of road. Now, fortifications like the Dynamic Handling Package, which included an M Sport limited slip rear differential and beefier M Sport brakes, and the M Sport Package, which included a variable sport steering setting and configurable gauge cluster, undoubtedly helped with the performance. But overall, the chassis of this car is fantastic, and it rewards drivers confident enough to hurl it into a corner at speed.
That said, the 430i is no bare-knuckle brawler, and it handled some of Seattle's roughest pavement with aplomb. The gauge cluster even warns drivers when they're approaching a particularly rough patch of tarmac, which is nice info to have if you're heading into unfamiliar territory.
